《Reading》

is a joy, and delving deeply into the Buddhist scriptures is the finest way for sentient beings to personally savor the nectar of the Dharma. Through sharing and discussion with fellow members of the reading group, we broaden the horizons of the Buddha’s teachings.
With the Dharma in our lives, we find peace and ease; with the Dharma in society, we cultivate respect and inclusiveness; and only with the Dharma in the world can there be true peace, free from conflict.

To uphold Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s idea of incorporating reading into our daily life, Humanistic Buddhist Reading Associations oblige Buddhists to pick up Buddhist sutras. The gradual and step by step process helps uncover the truth within Buddhism. It creates enduring learning through different life stages. The group discussions also bring forth the wisdom of collective creation and enhance our religious belief.

“Reading” is an enjoyment. Studying the sutras is the best way to learn Buddhism. Through discussions, we open up the dimensions of Buddhism. With Buddhism, life will be harmonious and free. With Buddhism, society will have respect and tolerance. With Buddhism, the world will be peaceful.Hence, “incorporating reading into our daily life” is not only the mission of Humanistic Buddhist Reading Associations, but also the responsibility of all.

Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Humanistic Buddhism

The Humanistic Buddhism Reading Group upholds the concept of "Life Enriched by the Fragrance of Books" advocated by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. It guides Buddhist disciples to pick up the Buddhist classics, progressively finding the fundamental basis for cutting off delusions and realizing the truth (斷惑證真) in the Dharma. It creates a field for lifelong learning to address the life issues they face at different stages. Through dialogue and self-reflection, it stimulates the wisdom of collective creation, thereby elevating the life level of religious faith.

"Reading" is a pleasure, and "Immersing oneself in the Sutras" (深入經藏) is the best channel for sentient beings to personally taste the profound flavor of the Dharma (醍醐法味). By interacting and discussing with fellow reading group members, the dimensions of the Dharma are broadened. With the Dharma, life becomes peaceful and self-possessed; with the Dharma, society becomes respectful and inclusive; and with the Dharma, the world can achieve peace without conflict. Therefore, striving for the ideal of "Life Enriched by the Fragrance of Books" is not only the mission of the Humanistic Buddhism Reading Group but also a target that all people should regard as their bounden duty to work towards.

Our Aims

The founding aim of the "Humanistic Buddhism Reading Group" is to promote an atmosphere of literary appreciation in the world (書香人間) and drive the global trend of reading. Based on the recognition that "the sea of learning has no limits, and learning is endless," it seeks to cultivate the spirit and habit of "live and learn." Through mutual encouragement, members jointly pursue the spiritual sustenance of the Dharma, aiming to enhance social harmony and promote peace and well-being in the human world.

Our Origin

When Venerable Master Hsing Yun founded Fo Guang Shan, he established the four core principles: "To propagate the Dharma through culture, to nurture talent through education, to benefit society through charity, and to purify hearts and minds through spiritual practice." Among these, culture and education are important components of Fo Guang Shan's efforts to promote the concept of "Humanistic Buddhism."

For decades, many followers primarily used listening to lectures as their learning channel. However, the truly effective way to replace passive learning with proactive, self-directed study should be an egalitarian learning style where everyone is free to speak. Therefore, at the "International Fo Guang Hui Directors' Meeting" held in South Africa in 2001, an appeal was made for Buddhism to strive towards four directions of propagation: "Localization of Monasteries, Bringing the Dharma into Daily Life, Equality Between Monastics and Laity, and Life Enriched by the Fragrance of Books." To more concretely realize the ideal of "Life Enriched by the Fragrance of Books," the Master officially established the "Humanistic Buddhism Reading Group" on New Year's Day 2002. Through planned organization, it aims to launch a global reading trend and regards "Life Enriched by the Fragrance of Books" as the best path for "Lifelong Learning."

Venerable Master Hsing Yun was born in Chiangsu Province, China in 1927 and entered a monastery near Nanjing at age twelve. He was fully ordained in 1941, and is the 48th patriarch of the Linchi (Rinzai) Ch'an school. In 1949, amid the turbulence of civil war, he went to Taiwan.

In Taiwan, he began fulfilling his long-held vow of promoting Humanistic Buddhism, which takes to heart spiritual practice in daily life. With an emphasis on not needing to "go some place else" to find enlightenment, we can realize our true nature in the here and now, within this precious human birth and this world. When we actualize altruism, joyfulness, and universality, we are practicing the fundamental concepts of Humanistic Buddhism. When we give faith, hope, joy, and service, we are helping all beings, as well as ourselves. For nearly a half century, Venerable Master Hsing Yun has devoted his efforts to transforming this world through the practice of Humanistic Buddhism.

He is the founder of the Fo Guang Shan International Buddhist Order, which is headquartered in Taiwan and supports temples worldwide. The Order emphasizes education and service and maintains public universities, Buddhist colleges, libraries, publishing houses, Buddhist art galleries and tearooms, free mobile medical clinics, children's home, retirement home, high school, and television station. The Order's lay service organization, Buddha's Light International Association, also has active chapters worldwide.

Venerable Master Hsing Yun is an outspoken proponent of equality among all people and religious traditions. The Order has the largest number of female monastics of any Buddhist order today. By providing and supporting educational and leadership opportunities, he has worked to improve the status of women in Taiwan. He has held full ordination ceremonies for women of the Mahayana, Theravada, and Vajrayana traditions. In addition, Master Hsing Yun annually organizes conferences to bring together the various Buddhist schools and to promote dialogue between Buddhists and other major religious groups.

Master Hsing Yun is a prolific writer and has authored over one hundred books in Chinese. His writings have been translated into English and many other languages. His works of the Life of Sakyamuni Buddha and the sixteen-volume Fo Guang Buddhist Dictionary have both won Taiwan's highest humanitarian awards. His biography Handing Down the Light, Hsing Yun's Ch'an Talks, The Lion's Roar, The Hundred Sayings Series, and The Humanistic Buddhism Series are published in Taiwan and are in English. Being Good: A Guide to Buddhist Ethics, Only a Great Rain, Lotus in a Stream, Where is Your Buddha Nature: Stories to Instruct and Inspire are published by American publishers and are in English. His numerous lectures also continue to be translated into English.

Based in Taiwan, Venerable Master Hsing Yun travels extensively. His insightful, engaging, and witty lectures unfailingly endear him to audiences. He reminds us that to transform our world, we must be actively engaged in it. "Community transcends the individual," he says, "and in doing so, fulfills the individual in the most complete way possible." Wherever he goes, he encourages people to unite both the local and global community into a world of complete equality, joyfulness, and perfect peace.
